College Kids and Monkeys About Equal on Math

msn.com - "Elizabeth Brannon, an assistant professor of psychology and neuroscience at Duke, studies how human adults and infants, lemurs and monkeys think about numbers without using language. Her goal is to identify brain systems that support number sense and determine how this cognitive skill develops.

"Number [sense] is one of the more abstract domains of cognition: Three coins and three loaves of bread are very different concepts," Brannon said in a Duke news release. "Yet, many studies show that babies, even in the first year of life, can tell the difference between quantities."

She's found that both human infants and macaque monkeys who've seen the same number of objects repeated in different-looking sets recognize when there's a new number of objects. She also found that college students and macaque have similar speed and accuracy when doing a rough sort of math by summing sets of objects without actually counting them." [link]

Human Task Switches Considered Harmful

joelonsoftware.com - "When you're managing a team of programmers, one of the first things you have to learn to get right is task allocation. That's just a five-dollar word for giving people things to do. It's known colloquially as "file dumping" in Hebrew (because you dump files in peoples' laps). And how you decide which files to dump in which laps is one of the areas where you can get incredible productivity benefits if you do it right. Do it wrong, and you can create one of those gnarly situations where nobody gets anything accomplished and everybody complains that "nothing ever gets done around here."" [link]

MusicBox: music collection visualization

hackszine.com - "For her Masters thesis at the MIT Media Lab, Anita Lillie created a music library visualization tool called MusicBox. The project will analyze the songs in a music library and group them based on a number of different dimensions - stuff like song length, tempo, ID3 genre information, and more advanced spectral properties of the audio.

This project is killer in so many ways, but my favorite feature is that you can use your mouse to draw a path through the song graph and and the tool will create a playlist that smoothly transitions between the different genres along that path. If this ever gets released, human DJs are going to have to step up their game." [link]

It May Be Time to Think About Buying a House

nytimes.com - "Five or 10 years from now, when the financial crisis has ended and housing prices are up smartly once more, we will look in the rearview mirror and realize that we missed a golden age for first-time home buyers.

Then, everyone who sat on their down payment savings accounts for a few years too long will kick themselves for not taking advantage of what may turn out to be the buying opportunity of a lifetime for those who can qualify for a mortgage.

Unfortunately, we do not know when this golden age will begin, because we will be able to identify a bottom to the housing market only with the benefit of hindsight. But as it does with the stock market, the moment will probably arrive when everyone is feeling the most pessimistic." [link]
